Issues with Mesa drivers - OpenGL 3.3 Compatibility Profile required This is a known issues that causes the remastered versions of the games to not work with the Mesa drivers. It is discussed in the bug report 41551. The games require the OpenGL 3.3 Compatibility Profile that should be supported by the Mesa drivers starting from version 18.2.0. Please check if the compatibility profile is supported by your setup with the command glxinfo grep version. If so, then set/export the environment variable MESA_GL_VERSION_OVERRIDE=3.3COMPAT before launching the games.
This patch adds a vast unit cap option to multiplayer/skirmish, and adjusts the unit caps closer to the classics. However Homeworld remastered has engine limitations around unit caps; including a max of about 250 units per class, and no unit cap options for the campaigns.
As for the festive ghost of Homeworld future, there are a lot of big projects just on the horizon. Veteran modding outfit Phoenix Interactive are gearing up to launch three total conversion mods in the new year. Battlestar Galactica: Fleet Commander, Mass Effect Reborn and Stargate: Space Conflict. While older builds of these mods are available for the original game, the remastered versions appear to be a far more ambitious set of productions, with the Stargate mod promising a scripted campaign with voicework lifted (where appropriate) from the TV show.
While threadbare, only partially functional and long out of date, there's an early demo of Stargate: Space Conflict here on Steam. If nothing else, it features some flashy UI work, wholly replacing Homeworld 2's main menus. Phoenix aim to get the first wave of Stargate remastered releases out January 2020, followed by Mass Effect sometime in June, and Battlestar out by the end of the year. Is three total conversions in development too much for a single team? Probably, but I'm excited to see how the Stargate launch early next year goes, if nothing else.
To celebrate the launch of the remastered stand-alone expansion, GOG.com is giving big discounts for all of its "Homeworld" titles until the end of the month. The "Remastered Collection" can now be picked up for $12. "Emergence" is currently priced at $9, while "Deserts of Kharak" is available for $17.
The game takes place fifteen years after the original game. After destroying the Taiidan Emperor and reclaiming their ancient homeworld of Hiigara, the Kushan re-establish their clans, or "kiith", in a great council, though some clans have precedence over others. The Mothership, with Fleet Command and the hyperspace core removed from it, remains in orbit over Hiigara as a shipyard. Meanwhile, the Taiidan Empire has collapsed after years of civil war, and the new Taiidani Republic has arisen as an ally of the newly minted Hiigarans, while the Imperialists and their Turanic Raider allies continue to raid both Hiigaran and Republic space.
Following this, the Kuun-Lan makes contact with a Hiigaran carrier known as the Caal-Shto, which takes the majority of the information that the Somtaaw have on the Beast so that they could return with reinforcements. Unfortunately, the Caal-Shto becomes subverted by unknown means and leads the Kuun-Lan into a trap, where the Hiigarans have to fend off a massive Beast fleet led by a mothership class vessel. This ship was no other than the former research module that they jettisoned early in the campaign. It was not only capable of communication, but was also seeking their origin point of the Naggarok. Despite these setbacks, the Kuun-Lan manages to locate their sister ship and finally get vital information to their homeworld, whose territories were on the verge of buckling with both attacks from the Imperialists and the spreading Beast infestation. 2ff7e9595c
